Big Sur
It is only recently that Big Sur became accessible. Today it remains remote and
undisturbed, a magnet for artists and writers.
Big Sur is the name given to what appears to be a stretch of highway 1 south of
Santa Cruz, winding its way through redwood forest and over steep coastal cliffs of
breathtaking beauty.
With every passing mile of highway seeming more beautiful than the last, it may be
difficult to decide where to stop the car and pause a while. But not to worry, we
have grown to know Big Sur intimately and would love to share with you a few of her
secrets.
Sights/ Shopping
Henry Miller Library: Highway 1, Big Sur 93920
Though it isn't actually a library, it's a damn fine bookstore. Eric has been
living it up selling books at the library for over a year. The small gallery is
packed to the gills with interesting stuff. The eclectic collection of books is
fantastic, especially while wearing your shades and soaking up the sun on the front
deck. That's right, free coffee, Internet service and ping-pong too. And during the
summer, the library hosts an open mic and a short film screening every week. A place
not to be missed, and pity your soul if you do.
Dining:
Nepenthe Restaurant: Highway 1, Big Sur 93920
Named after the Greek mythological drink of forgetfulness, Nepenthe was once a venue
for hippies and others escaping the city life. Go figure. Now, it's a place to find
a $13 hamburger and fries. But don't let that put you off; it's a nice place to have
dinner. Nepenthe does have a magnificent view of an already magnificent coast, and
with some strong drinks, you'll be doubly glad you came.
The Big Sur Bakery: Highway 1, Big Sur 93920
Though all restaurants are expensive in Big Sur-relatively speaking-the Big Sur
Bakery offers the tastiest food served up by the coolest hosts. In the mornings,
croissants, brownies, and even jelly donuts are on the menu to accompany your
caffeine fix, whether it be coffee or tea. In the evenings, the Bakery offers a cool
atmosphere, good music, and food that will make you embarrassed, moaning out so
loudly in such a classy place. Shame.
Fernwood Resort: Highway 1, Big Sur 93920
The Fernwood Resort offers you rooms, campgrounds, cabins and tents at good rates.
And if you're staying there, you're lucky not to have to drive. Just a hop, skip,
and a jump away is the Fernwood Bar and Redwood Grill. Nice grill food at an
unreasonable rate is quickly accepted as the large fireplace, big screen TV and
comfortable sofas warm your heart. Have fun sitting outside and looking at people
through the large window behind the bar. With a full bar at hand, they're probably
doing the same.
Drinking:
Maiden Publik Pub: Highway 1, Village Center Shops, Big Sur 93920
Under a dynamic new ownership, The Maiden Pub offers the best prices on food and
drinks in Big Sur. With live music on Friday nights, great food, and oh yes, good beer,
the Maiden is the place to go to meet Big Sur locals and celebrate quality for a
reasonable price.
