University of California
Built into the wooded hillside, the university campus has produced 18 Nobel Prize winners and has lent Berkeley a worldwide reputation for its progressive liberalism. The university was the cradle of America's youth revolution in the sixties as the war in Viet Nam escalated and many students rebelled.
The university is home to the country's second-largest library and museums dedicated
to the arts and sciences.
